The Game Pass is currently a strong offer if you want to enjoy games as a flat rate. Now there are rumors that Sony is preparing a similar offer for the PS4 and PS5. MeinMMO explains to you what it is about.
Currently, you can subscribe to two different services on the PS4 and PS5: PS Plus and PS Now. However, the online magazine Bloomberg has explained that Sony is probably working on a new project called “Spartacus” (via bloomberg.com).
Where do the information come from? The information comes from persons familiar with Sony’s plans and also from documents that Bloomberg claims to have accessed. Additional information comes from a person who wishes to remain anonymous as he did not have permission to speak to the press.
“Spartacus” presumably involves a completely new subscription model that Sony allegedly wants to provide as a new competition for Microsoft’s Game Pass.
New subscription model to unite PS Plus and PS Now
What is the current situation? At this point (December 4, 2021), there is PS Plus and PS Now. PS Plus is currently a prerequisite for most online games and offers a few free games. PlayStation Now gives you the opportunity to stream or download older games.
In the new subscription model, Sony allegedly wants to merge these two systems into one and offer even more features. Overall, there are supposed to be three tiers of the subscription model:
- The first tier would include the known benefits of PS Plus such as multiplayer and a few free games.
- The second tier would, similar to the Game Pass, provide some PS4 games for free.
- The third tier would offer extended demos, game streaming, and a library of classic PS1, PS2, PS3, and PSP games.
New subscription model to be available on PS4 and PS5
Where can you use the new subscription? According to Bloomberg, the new subscription is supposed to be available on both PS4 and PS5 and should give you access to numerous games.
It is probably not surprising that the PS4 is also expected to benefit from the new subscription since the PlayStation 4 has sold over 100 million units and many users are still gaming on the old console. This is because the PS5 is constantly sold out everywhere and is hardly available.
However, it is quite possible that Sony will make the new subscription model a bit more extensive for subscribers with PS5, just as Microsoft makes certain games available only to Xbox players in its Game Pass. Sony also provides PS5 owners the PS Plus Collection with 20 free games, which PS4 players do not have access to. However, this is only a speculation and has not been confirmed by any side.
