Sony is bringing the Passkey feature for the PS4 and PS5. This adds another layer of security to the console that you should use to protect your account.
Sony has announced that it will offer a new layer of security on the PS4 and PS5 with “Passkey.” This allows you to make your PSN account even more secure. On MeinMMO, you can read what this is all about and how to activate the feature.
What is Passkey? Passkey is a method that allows you to log in to your console without a password. Instead, you log in on your mobile phone or computer and use a fingerprint or a PIN to unlock your console or account.
Passkey brings a new layer of security for your account
Why you should activate Passkey: The big advantage is that your password cannot be spied on in conventional ways. The code you receive can only be used once, and the next time you will receive a new code. This makes the system quite secure. Another advantage: You only need the Passkey to log in and no additional password anymore. The benefits of Passkey over the 2FA method are also explained by the colleagues at security-insider.de.
Which apps/programs are supported? Sony itself recommends the following software or apps on its own page (via playstation.com):
- iCloud Keychain
- Google Password Manager
- 1Password
- and Dashlane
At the same time, Sony points out that there could be issues with some hardware security keys. Therefore, it is recommended to additionally sync your key with a mobile phone.
How to activate Passkey on PS4 and PS5: You can activate Passkey by going to the “Security” section in your account management on the PS4 or PS5. Alternatively, this can also be done via computer or mobile phone.
- Log in to the Account Management directly at Sony.
- Go to the “Security” section and enable “Log in with Passkey.”
- Select “Create a Passkey.”
- Choose how you want to create a Passkey and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup.
Once Passkey is activated, you will receive a confirmation email. You can then use the Passkey to log in to PSN.
