Sony has introduced a whole range of new features for its PS5. Included is an update for the expandable storage.
Sony has unveiled a comprehensive update for the PS5. Included are numerous convenience features:
- Support for a second controller in a game.
- Dolby Atmos in games with 3D audio
- Improved options for joining a group of players.
Also included is an update for SSDs that you can install in your PS5. But if you really want to maximize it, it will cost you a lot of money.
In the future, more devices related to PlayStation will be released:
Sony now lets you install larger storage in your PS5
What does the update offer? In the future, you can install m.2-SSDs with up to 8 TB of storage in your PS5. Previously, only storage modules with up to 4 TB were functional. Therefore, you can double your storage soon if you already have a 4 TB m.2-SSD installed in your PS5.
What is the problem? The prices for such models with 8 TB of storage are currently quite high. Two models are given as examples:
- For a Sabrent M.2-SSD with 8 TB, you currently pay around 1,200 Euros on Amazon
- For a Corsair MP600 PRO with 8 TB, you pay around 910 Euros, but in some cases, the prices are even above the 1,000 Euro mark.
So, anyone who really wants to get the absolute maximum storage out of their console currently pays a lot of money for such models. What is certain is that games are getting bigger and most players are not prepared for it, but 8 TB is definitely still not the norm in gaming.
For 4 TB, you only pay “only” 300 to 400 Euros, which is still not cheap. For 2 TB, you then pay more like 120 Euros.

If the selection of large M.2-SSDs increases, prices should also fall in the long term. Currently, 1 to 2 TB should still be more than enough.

When will the update come? Probably in 4 to 6 weeks. The current update is only being rolled out to beta testers, the official update usually follows a few weeks later.
If you want to participate in the beta, you must register directly with Sony. You will then receive a confirmation email once you are accepted. Typically, this can take a while.
How big will the update be? This is not yet known. However, we will keep you updated when we know more about it. Typically, updates on the PS5 range from a few hundred megabytes to about 3 GB.
By the way, there is also a new series about an old PlayStation game, as reported by our colleagues at GamePro.
