Sony is currently experimenting with a new advertising format – “Live from PS5”. The format resembles a news show, but the field reporters cover encounters with well-known characters from PlayStation games. An advertisement during Super Bowl 57 caused false hopes and frustration.
PlayStation has recently been using an old trick to make its new promotional videos for the PS5 a bit more exciting.
It runs in the style of a news broadcast, and the hosts switch over to the field reporter, who is in the midst of the chaotic events.
The first of these promotional videos showed many different field reporters. Among them was a woman standing in Manhattan, New York, and you can apparently see criminals who have been caught in sticky nets. In the next scene, Spider-Man waves.
In San Francisco, a certain Aloy discovers an old, untouched land filled with strange metal creatures and an overgrown Golden Gate Bridge. You can watch the first trailer here:
However, apparently the new promotional videos are too open and spark the viewer’s imagination a bit too much. The first film led to speculation about a new Uncharted game (via gamespot.com).
And the film from the Super Bowl first caused hope, then frustration. The Canadian Instagram account shared the following image beforehand:
So what should one expect? Just a short clip with Kratos and Atreus zooming through the stadium during the Super Bowl? Or the announcement of a DLC for God of War Ragnarok that many fans are hoping for?
Apparently, many users chose the second option and were then deeply disappointed. In fact, it was just a 30-second video in which Kratos and Atreus are briefly seen running into the snow-covered stadium:
Under the video on YouTube, the comments look accordingly (via youtube.com):
- That one guy: “Everyone five hours ago: ‘We’re getting a DLC, it’s going to be great!’ Now: ‘Was that even a trailer?'”
- Damous X: “Don’t have expectations, then you won’t be disappointed”
- Tizoc Vazquez: “Was that it?”
The video was released during Super Bowl 57, but was not part of the TV broadcast advertising. The spot was even only shared by PlayStation Canada. However, fans are now worldwide, and when it comes to the hope for new content for their favorite game, frustration can quickly arise.
