Sony acquired the developer Bungie in January 2022. Now Sony stated that it was a good decision.
This is the background:
- Sony acquired Bungie in 2022 for 3.6 billion US dollars. However, Bungie should remain independent and Destiny 2 will still be playable on Xbox.
- Just a few days earlier, Microsoft announced it is acquiring Activision Blizzard. The price here is 70 billion US dollars, making it the most expensive acquisition in the industry to date.
Both Sony and Microsoft are trying to improve their position in the gaming market.
Now, Sony and PlayStation’s President & CEO Jim Ryan has commented on the high prices and especially on the acquisition of Bungie. He made it clear that the acquisition of Bungie would have been significantly better for Sony.
The acquisition of Bungie benefits Sony more than acquiring Activision Blizzard would have
This is what Sony says: Sony and PlayStation President & CEO Jim Ryan stated in a conversation about the Activision deal (via twitter.com):
We know Activision very well. They are probably one of our most important partners. When you look at Sony’s capital investment and compare 69 billion dollars for Activision with 3.6 billion dollars for Bungie, we believe that Bungie can deliver much more for us than a 69 billion dollar acquisition of Activision. And that’s before considering the relative value of this specific transaction.
Ryan is referencing Microsoft’s acquisition. Microsoft reportedly paid 69 billion US dollars for the acquisition of Activision Blizzard.
Both acquisitions are controversial among players and observers
What about Microsoft? The acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft has sparked a number of heated discussions. Both official entities like regulators have already sued against the deal and Sony stated that the deal would harm them. But it now looks like Microsoft may successfully close the deal.
How did it go for Sony? In the case of Sony’s acquisition of Bungie, there was significantly less criticism from the official side. However, it was mainly players who were surprised by the sudden acquisition:
Many gamers believe Bungie is “too expensive”: The studio has nothing to offer except Destiny and that is already a “dying brand.” However, Sony explained that they did not acquire Bungie because of Destiny, but for new games they want to develop.
Therefore, many gamers are now curious about what they can expect in the future. At least a number of brands that Sony offers should have a chance to be adapted as MMOs. We present you 5 games directly on MeinMMO:
