Now the Sony CEO is addressing the issue. He discusses some reasons that explain the shortage of PS5 consoles and apologizes to the players. MeinMMO summarizes his statements for you.
Why are there so few PS5?
This is what the Sony CEO says: Jim Ryan points out that over 4.5 million units have been sold in the first months. According to Ryan, this is more than at the release of the PS4. Overall, the interest is significantly greater than expected.
Partly, he attributes this to the COVID-19 pandemic. Supply chains have also been affected by restrictions. As examples, Ryan mentions individual components such as semiconductors, which are also used in smartphones and PCs. We have already dealt extensively with the topic of semiconductors on MeinMMO:
The transition to a completely digital distribution system has been a tough challenge: “We had to switch to a distribution model that is fully online and which we never had before.” (via GQ) The pandemic has further fueled interest in consoles and video games.
The Sony CEO promises in his statement that they are working hard on the problem and are trying to deliver supply as quickly as possible. He also apologizes to the players: “We are truly sorry and at the same time very grateful for the interest that is so strong.”
Additionally, he promises that the supply of consoles will be replenished every month so that everyone can get their PS5. They have come out of the Christmas season with renewed vigor and want to ensure greater supply.
What do you think about these statements? Do you find the reasons understandable? Or are you still frustrated that it went so bumpy? Have you managed to buy a console in the past few days?
