Since the Early Access release, Sons of the Forest has attracted hundreds of thousands of players. However, the game still has several issues, bugs, and feels somewhat unfinished. Now the second hotfix is here, addressing some things that apparently were overlooked.
This is the situation with Sons of the Forest:
- Sons of the Forest was the most anticipated game on Steam, and the rush was enormous. The launch was so good for the survival game, that even the Steam servers crashed. It became the biggest survival game on Steam.
- During the release weekend, 411,804 players played simultaneously (via steamcharts). Meanwhile, the number has dropped significantly, partly because there is a lack of content.
- Sons of the Forest impresses with gameplay but can be completed quickly. Speedrunners even need only under 10 minutes.
A problem with the game is that it was released in Early Access instead of as a full release as planned. How much longer it will be further developed until Sons of the Forest is “finished” is still uncertain.
However, it’s not just potential content that is missing. Some features were overlooked and are now being added, one week later, with the already second patch.
What are these changes? The post with the patch notes on Steam includes only 5 points:
- there is a hotkey system, items in the inventory can be assigned to hotkeys by pressing the keys 0-9
- relevant tips are now in loading screens
- the reminder that a scene can be skipped now appears when a corresponding key is pressed
- a tip for heavy attacks can now be seen in loading screens
- the function “Back” (default on Escape) now closes the tutorial book, the building notebook, and the backpack
While the changes sound minimal, they are exceptionally well received by the community.

Update brings cheers: “Good job, devs”
On reddit, the currently biggest threads in the subreddits of The Forest and Sons of the Forest are the messages about the hotfix. All changes have been well received, especially the ability to close certain menus with Escape.
“Sons of the Forest has become 50% better” says one user, who receives much approval. Others explain that they often died because they couldn’t put away their backpack in panic.
While the changes are small, they still bring joy and thanks to the developers.
Endnight Games has already promised that Sons of the Forest will be continually developed over the coming months. How many new contents are still to come is still unknown. But I am already sure: Sons of the Forest is important for the genre:
Survival MMOs lack what WoW is for MMORPGs – Will Sons of the Forest be “the big thing”?
