Over the years, Son Goku had to face numerous enemies in Dragon Ball. However, if he had befriended one opponent at the beginning of his journey, all his adversaries would have been no problem at all.
Which opponent is it? During the Fortune Teller Baba saga, Son Goku encountered the fortune teller Uranai Baba. She gathered a group of fighters against whom the Saiyan and his friends had to compete.
Among these fighters was Spike the Devil Man, who is simply called “Devil” in German. He is a tall devil from hell, who unfortunately had very few appearances in Dragon Ball:
- In the Fortune Teller Baba saga as an opponent of Son Goku
- In the King Piccolo saga as a briefly shown image
- In the Majin Boo saga of Dragon Ball Z, he lends Son Goku his energy for the decisive Genkidama against Boo.
But the devil was not one of Uranai Baba’s strongest fighters for nothing. If he had played a larger role, all the opponents Son Goku had to face would have been a piece of cake. Because he possessed a power with which he could annihilate any villain.

The devil would be one of the strongest opponents in Dragon Ball
What ability makes him so strong? The devil masters an attack called Devilmite Beam. In the anime, Muten Roshi explains that the devil’s attack can exploit any negative thought of an opponent. No matter how small that thought is.
This rage, malice, aggression, or other negative thoughts can then be transformed into an energy beam, the Devilmite Beam. Through this beam, an opponent’s heart literally explodes. The attack is thus an assault that leads to instant death.
How would the beam have been useful today? It is obvious that opponents like Freezer, Cell, or Boo harbored evil thoughts. Therefore, the devil could have used his power to generate his Devilmite Beam and make the opponents explode. He could have spared Son Goku many difficult battles.
But unfortunately for us, Son Goku did not befriend the devil, but rather defeated him in a quick fight. It could also have been that the devil’s fighting potential was not sufficient. Perhaps Freezer and co. would have crushed him before he could generate his beam. However, the devil could have easily defeated all of his subordinates. For that reason, the devil remains an exciting thought experiment.

How did Son Goku fare against him? The devil had no chance against Son Goku, as the Saiyan has a pure heart. Thus, the beam could not exploit any negative thoughts to make Goku explode.
After the devil, Son Goku had to deal with all sorts of nasty scum. One of these enemies is Cell, who traveled to Goku’s current timeline in a capsule. Cell can absorb other people and thereby gain strength. However, he can only do this because he is ugly: Dragon Ball Z: A villain has his strongest ability only because he is ugly
