Yesterday, the new MMORPG Throne and Liberty was released. Although the reviews on Steam are mixed, it seems to be well received in the MMORPG community on PS5 and Xbox, as indicated by initial comments on reddit.
This is what was thought in advance about Throne and Liberty:
Throne and Liberty has a difficult development history. The game was announced in 2011 and was supposed to lead the Korean MMORPG giant NCSoft out of the crisis around 2016 as ”Lineage Eternal”. The MMORPG was planned as a hybrid for PC and Mobile. They were already far along, had started the PR campaign, and were actually ready for a worldwide release.
But the game didn’t function properly in playtests back then. NCSoft also hit big with pure mobile games, so Throne and Liberty was put back into development and was eventually developed as a game for PC and consoles. It launched in South Korea in 2023, and on October 1, 2024 with us.
In South Korea, where consoles do not play a significant role, Throne and Liberty had a mixed reception. Thus, the expectations here in the West were low. And many PC players also seem to express themselves rather cautiously about the game.
“Consoles have urgently needed a new MMORPG”
Who likes the game? On reddit, there are some really enthusiastic comments about the game.
One user says: He felt after just an hour that the game would ruin his future. Just the fact that you can teleport seamlessly, he thinks is great. The story is okay, but above all, the world is beautiful and so is the music. He has heard a lot of bad things about the game, but he enjoys it a lot.
Another user on reddit says: Especially on console, Throne and Liberty feels great. He feels like he’s playing ESO or Black Desert Online again at release. Consoles urgently needed a new MMORPG – all the others have been around for 10 years.
Another player also says the MMORPG works better with a controller than with a mouse and keyboard.
There are also some veterans who rave about Throne and Liberty mainly as a “nostalgia kick” because it strongly reminds them of Lineage 2.
People seem to enjoy that Throne and Liberty is so lively at launch and has that “new MMORPG” experience, with so many players logging in and being on the go at the same time.
In another thread on reddit they believe: Throne and Liberty is the best MMORPG for the Steam Deck, other MMORPGs like WoW or Final Fantasy XIX are rather frustrating on the Steam Deck, but Throne and Liberty runs great.
Reaction from PC players to Throne and Liberty is rather cautious
Are there other voices? On MeinMMO, relatively many readers seem to be rather disappointed with the game. Here, one can already see problems with pay-to-win or simply dismiss the game as “total garbage”.
A reader from MeinMMO criticizes that you can tell the game was originally planned for mobile.
The user Nexus1611 says he downloaded Throne and Liberty for PS5, finds the game completely overloaded, and hasn’t even made it out of the tutorial.
Many also criticize the mixed situation with the servers.
This is what it’s about: Throne and Liberty is indeed the first “big MMORPG” for PlayStation 5 and Xbox since Black Desert was released for the older generation in 2019.
Amazon is taking a bit of wind out of its own sails here – as New World was actually planned as a major release for the consoles.
The game certainly seems to polarize. Many are taking a look at a free-to-play game with good graphics, even people who usually have no inclination for MMORPGs and grind, especially games from South Korea are not made for our tastes.
But some players seem to be fully indulging in the honeymoon feeling of a new MMORPG at release and are excited about how much is happening in the game right now. If you want to learn more about the MMORPG Throne and Liberty, you’re in the right place at MeinMMO: Throne and Liberty starts off mixed, only 55 percent positive on Steam
