Netflix is increasingly opening up to the anime sector and has achieved a successful hit with the live-action series based on One Piece. Now, a new hype-anime titled Solo Leveling is coming with real actors.
What kind of series will this be? Netflix has confirmed on X that production of the Korean live-action series has begun. The fact that the series will be a Korean production indicates that the creators want to stay close to the source material – after all, Solo Leveling is based on a South Korean web novel.
The series is being worked on by:
- Sung Jin-woo will be played by Byeon Woo-seok. He is a rapidly rising star in the K-drama scene and known from series like Lovely Runner (2024) and 20th Century Girl (2022).
- The direction will be handled by the duo Lee Hae-jun and Byung-seo. You might know their work from films like Ashfall and Castaway on the Moon. Their focus so far has been on action and drama sequences.
- Kakao Entertainment is acting as the production partner. The company holds the intellectual property rights. In order to realize the creative vision, SANAI PICTURES is also on board.
It is not yet known when the series will premiere on Netflix. As soon as Netflix releases more information about the launch, it is likely that there will also be information about additional actors and a first trailer. But for now, we must be patient.
Solo Leveling is oriented towards One Piece
What experience does Netflix have in this area? A few years ago, the live-action series of One Piece set sail and became a worldwide success. It’s no surprise that filming for Season 2 began shortly after.
Now fans are eagerly waiting for the premiere and especially how the CGI Chopper will perform.
This shows that Netflix currently has a knack for producing live-action series. With Solo Leveling, the company has chosen a hype-anime that has become the most-watched anime on Crunchyroll.
However, that hasn’t always been the case: Previously, Netflix made a few missteps. This includes Cowboy Bebop and Death Note. The live-action series of Death Note is currently rated just 4.5 out of 10 stars on IMDb.
The first turning point came with Alice in Borderland. The series is based on the eponymous manga and became a success. A third season will follow this year.
