Fans of the Anime Solo Leveling are likely to be grinding their teeth. Their series is going on a break – and bringing a disliked recap episode.
Solo Leveling is still considered one of the big anime of the current winter season 2024. The story of Jin-Woo Sung, who is fatally wounded while exploring a “Gate” and is then granted special powers as the only human, has completely convinced even fans of the manga adaptation so far.
But now the hype is taking a significant hit. Because on February 24, no new episode of Solo Leveling will be released, there will only be a “recap” episode – the “Episode 7.5”.
What is a recap episode? A recap episode (recap = summary) summarizes the events of the series up to that point again. It is a compilation of the most important scenes so far, explaining the entire storyline up to the current point.
Recap episodes are therefore particularly suitable for people who do not watch anime via streaming services and might jump into a series late, in order not to miss out and to understand the beginnings of the story.
Among fans, recap episodes are generally considered quite annoying, as it is a “lost week” where there is no new episode, and thus one has to wait longer for fresh story and the progression of the plot.
Why are there recap episodes? The reasons for such a recap episode are varied, and in rare cases is the main reason actually to inform the viewers about the events of the previous episodes again.
Most of the time, recap episodes are a sign of mistakes in the very tightly scheduled production process. Anime episodes are not fully produced at the beginning of a series airing; instead, they are often finished only a few days or even hours before the release date.
This makes the production very prone to errors. If, for example, a voice actor falls ill for a few days or animators find that particularly impressive scenes are not finished, the production studio faces a dilemma. Either they accept a drastic reduction in quality (like very simple backgrounds or missing animations), or they use a recap episode.
As a rule, a recap episode is made very quickly, as it just involves editing existing material and narrating it with the voice of a single narrator.
With Solo Leveling, the regular continuation will therefore be on March 2.
