The change to the character Sokka in the Netflix adaptation “Avatar – The Last Airbender” is upsetting fans. They believe that this loses an important character development.
Who is Sokka? Sokka is Katara’s older brother. Together, they rescue the Avatar from the ice at the beginning of the series.
Sokka grew up with the worldview that men are warriors while women become healers. In the animated series, he is sexist at the beginning, continually underestimating women, including his little sister.
However, the character undergoes development throughout the series. The women around him make him realize that his former attitude was wrong; he becomes more mature and sheds his prior sexist ways.
Here you can see a trailer for the live-action adaptation from Netflix:
However, the actress playing Katara revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that this element was removed from Sokka’s character:
“I think we also removed the element of sexism [from Sokka]. I feel like there were a lot of moments in the original series that were questionable.”
How are fans reacting to the news? Many fans on X.com/Twitter express their anger. Several believe that the sexism at the beginning of the series is an important aspect of Sokka’s characterization.
Because only through this can he develop and become a more mature, better person throughout the story. Removing the negative aspect of his character at the beginning would invalidate the entire storyline of his improvement.
Here are some comments we’ve gathered:
- MrPaladinYT: “But I thought that was the point, to address the issue. It was a learning experience.”
- Vimyonk: “Oh great, they removed his personality and character development.”
- Platinum Equinox: “The character development is basically being thrown out the window. […]”

However, so far there has been no official statement regarding the extent to which the sexism of Sokka has been removed from the live-action adaptation.
Thus, the character could still undergo development by underestimating women at the beginning and being taught otherwise throughout the series. The changes might only involve inappropriate comments that are not included in the adaptation.
It remains to be seen how the live-action adaptation will ultimately handle this aspect of Sokka and whether the development will be completely removed or presented in a milder form.
