Here’s why you play Destiny 2: In our survey, we provided you with ten answers from which you could choose one option each. A total of 1,597 Guardians participated and shared their reasons for spending their time in Destiny 2:
- 32.94% of Guardians chose “Because there is no better loot shooter alternative for me”
- 16.53% chose “Due to the Season of Opulence”
- 13.09% of responses fell to “I wanted to check it out again”
- 10.83% of our readers chose “Other”
- 7.39% chose “Preparing for the Shadowkeep expansion”
- 6.26% of readers opted for “Because friends are playing again and the mood is better”
- 6.01% of responses fell to “Because there is now more content for hardcore players”
- 3.38% chose “Because Bungie is now the publisher itself”
- 2.76% of you “Do not play Destiny 2, but want to start with the free-to-play transition”
- 0.81% “Recently started with Destiny 2 because it was recommended”
What does the survey show? The most decisive reason why you are currently playing Destiny 2 is apparently the lack of corresponding alternatives. Despite some criticism, around a third of survey participants still apparently see no better looter shooter than Destiny 2.
In addition, Bungie seems to be doing quite a few things right with the Season of Opulence, as nearly 16% of respondents returned due to the currently ongoing Season 7. Some simply wanted to check it out again and see what has changed in the game.
What was the survey about? Just a few weeks ago, Season 7 started in Destiny 2. Players were presented with new content with the Season of Opulence, such as the Menagerie and the new raid, Crown of Sorrow.
Many new features have also been announced for the fall, which should appeal to every player: The new expansion Shadowkeep, in English “The Fortress of Shadows,” will be released on September 17. At the same time, Year 1 of Destiny 2 will become free-to-play.
All this news seems to have led to a surge in the Destiny 2 community, as recently the player count for the shooter is said to have risen to a million Guardians.

Munin says: “I have been a Guardian since day one. I have tried other games and even took a little break from Destiny since my clan disbanded, but overall I never stopped. Destiny 1 was a dream and I still play it sometimes. Destiny 2 had a rocky start as it turned some veterans away, but it never lost its charm for me.”
Bienenvogel writes: “I haven’t really stopped, so I guess that’s why I’m still playing at the moment. But none of the answers really fit perfectly. Partly because of the new season, partly because there isn’t another shooter that feels like this one. And because I bought the Pass two weeks ago. […] However, I believe that Shadowkeep will have to wait. I will check it out at launch, as always, just because of all the updates (Armor 2.0, etc.). But I will skip the DLC for now. You can get to the Moon without it :)”
5ta5ik writes: “As for me, I’m done with the game and won’t be coming back. I don’t like the DLC policy. I don’t want to support that. Annual passes here, DLCs there, and then the in-game shop – no thanks.”
Zukolada says: “I actually felt like the air was out after the Black Armory. I didn’t play for 4-5 months. Season 6 with Prime didn’t interest me either. But Season 7 is almost as awesome and extensive in core as Forsaken last year. Just great, the Opulence. And that’s exactly what Massive and others can’t pull off: reigniting that addictive factor completely anew.”
Alex Oben writes: “No matter how often it’s said: ‘When game XY comes out, Destiny is history,’ ‘Destiny is dead,’ or ‘Is anyone still playing this…’ Destiny somehow manages to come back around the corner. Maybe because it was the first shooter of its kind and you feel like you’re somehow coming home again. I’ll probably check it out again this weekend :)”
