Jonathan Nolan, the creator and executive producer of the upcoming Fallout series, explained in an interview what role The Last of Us played in the implementation of the video game adaptation.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter on April 3, 2024, Jonathan Nolan discussed the upcoming Amazon series Fallout.
He also addressed the expectations for video game adaptations as well as the series The Last of Us and explained how it served as a pioneer for his own series.

The Last of Us as an Example of a Successful Video Game Adaptation
Jonathan Nolan mentioned that he was pleased with the success of the series adaptation of The Last of Us. As he continued, he noted that the expectations for good gaming adaptations at the time he first met Todd Howard, the person responsible for several Fallout games, for lunch were still very low:
The bar for video game adaptations was not only low, it was non-existent – especially in the TV realm.
There would be people adapting a first-person game, and [a studio would say:] “So, the series will be shown from a first-person perspective.” No, that’s a peculiarity of the game, that’s not how you adapt it.

Jonathan Nolan acknowledged that it would have been nice if Fallout had become the first successful video game adaptation in the television sector, yet the success of The Last of Us also helped him in realizing his own project:
“It’s always nice to be the first. But when someone creates something as good as The Last of Us, it makes it easier because suddenly everyone understands what’s possible.”
Thus, The Last of Us served as a trailblazer and a good example of how to successfully implement a video game adaptation.
