About a day ago, the prize money for the SMITE World Championship rose to over a million dollars – and an end is not in sight yet.
The prize is not only calculated from donations by sponsors or even the developers themselves, rather the players determine how high the prize money will be through their in-game purchases.
How exactly does it work?
In SMITE, there has been the so-called “Odyssey” for eight weeks: Each week, a new item is added to the in-game shop, which players can then purchase for gems – for every 200 gems spent, one dollar goes into the prize pot. Of course, the different Odyssey items are made appealing to players: They are only available during the event, and every purchase also includes a treasure chest, the contents of which can far exceed the value of the original item. Additionally, there are bonus items, such as exclusive skins for gods, when a certain number of the Odyssey items has been purchased. Overall, players have added over 400,000 dollars to the jackpot – and an end is still a long way off.
It remains to be seen how much more money will go into the prize pot, to be distributed among the winners at the official SMITE World Championship in January 2015. We will inform you at the next milestone.
