Modding Skyrim – What You Need to Consider
For which edition of Skyrim are the mods? We have limited our mod selection to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition for PC. On platforms like Steam and GOG, you can still get the base game (The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim) or the VR version; however, the Special Edition has the largest active player base according to Steam Charts.
Nexusmods
We are limiting our selection to mods that you can download via the Nexusmods website. Nexusmods is one of the largest modding websites and curates the content offered there. These mods can be used for Steam games, but also for example for GOG downloads.
Vortex
The download of the mods goes directly through the website, but also through their tool, which is available in both a paid and a free version: Vortex. With it, you can also sort and edit your mods. Downloading Vortex is worthwhile.
Load Order
It’s also important to consider the order in which you load the mods when starting the game. You can also set these in Vortex. Usually, if your game crashes or doesn’t start at all, something is wrong with the load order. You can read how to manage it in Vortex here at Nexusmods.
Descriptions
All mods come with a description that may contain installation information. It’s best to read the descriptions again on Nexusmods itself to really get all the current installation information.
Your Skyrim Version
We are focusing here on mods for the Special Edition. However, some of them are also compatible with the Anniversary upgrade. Pay attention to the mod descriptions.
Do you have any mods that you absolutely need for every one of your Skyrim runs? Or do you swear by the vanilla experience? Let us know in the comments.
Indeed, even 13 years after release, it is still worth modding and playing Skyrim. The Elder Scrolls 6 is probably playable and in testing, but it will likely be a long time before it is released.
