Skulls & Bones, the recently announced pirate MMO from Ubisoft, is based on Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, but your role is actually just that of a ship. This makes the Ubisoft game ultimately more similar to World of Warships than to the Assassin saga.
Anyone who previously thought that in Ubisoft’s new pirate MMO Skulls & Bones you play as a pirate captain who can freely explore the vastness of the Indian Ocean will be disappointed at first. For even if you proudly see your captain at the helm of your pirate ship, he will forever remain there.
In Skulls & Bones you are actually just a pirate ship.
Skulls & Bones: It’s all about ships
Unlike Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, it’s not about WHERE you sail, but about HOW you sail. The game is basically a World of Warships with pirate ships from the 18th century. So if you were hoping to wreak havoc in pubs or explore treasure islands in Skulls & Bones, you won’t get everything you hoped for in the base game.
However, if you enjoy thrilling naval battles, you are likely to have a great time with Skulls & Bones. According to a colleague from Gamespot, the battles are said to feel extremely intense.
Due to the good weather and water physics, the handling of the ship noticeably changes when you sail against the wind or get into unfavorable currents. When the battle begins, the pieces fly and you have an indescribable feeling when you let entire broadside volleys tear through the enemy decks.
Skulls & Bones: Will there be landfall in story mode?
Action fans will therefore get their money’s worth, but those who want to explore the beautiful expanses of the Indian Ocean will be disappointed. However, the hope for a pirate life outside the ship is not yet completely buried in Davy Jones’ locker.
Ubisoft has only confirmed that there will be a solo campaign, but has not revealed any major details yet. Perhaps you will be able to get off the ship and into the pubs and treasure hides as a pirate captain.
What do you think of the focus of Skulls & Bones? Is a pure naval combat action game enough for you, or do you think Ubisoft is missing out on massive potential by using the beautiful world of the Indian Ocean in the 18th century merely as a backdrop for battles? Let us know in the comments!
