The former story chief of WoW comes to the conclusion that Legion is great – even now, since he is no longer working on it.
Developers are often convinced of their own games – anything else would be surprising. But what about former developers who now play an evolved game that they no longer work on?
Over a year ago, Chris Metzen left Blizzard to retire early. The reasons for this were manifold – he was burned out, struggled with panic attacks, and simply wanted to spend time with his family again.
During his recovery from an operation, Metzen apparently found plenty of time to dive back into “his” old game World of Warcraft and explore the areas of Legion. In the meantime, he has reached the endgame and is actively raiding, even though the last raid, Antorus, is still missing.
His conclusion so far: Legion is a masterpiece. It would bring him the most fun he has ever had in the endgame of World of Warcraft.
Later he explained that it is a nice change to be able to look at World of Warcraft from a distance and simply experience the game as a player. Although he was involved during the rough planning phase of Legion, it is a nice thing to recognize all the details.
Chris Metzen was considered one of the most creative minds at Blizzard, largely responsible for the Warcraft universe.
Although Chris Metzen no longer works at Blizzard, he still appears in new patches from time to time, as he remains a voice actor, for example for the elemental lord Ragnaros, King Varian Wrynn, or the former warchief of the Horde, Thrall.
Do you share Chris Metzen’s opinion and see the endgame of Legion as the best that World of Warcraft has ever had? Or do you have a different opinion?
