Ultima creator Richard “Lord British” Garriott shocks fans of the MMORPG Shroud of the Avatar with his statement that he prefers to play mobile games. Originally, the online game was even planned as a mobile game.
The release of the MMORPG Shroud of the Avatar is getting closer. This week there should be more information on whether the release will still take place this year. Meanwhile, monthly fundraising campaigns are taking place to keep the operation of the development studio going.
While the previous Steam reviews have been mixed and the current ratings are even “Mostly Negative,” Richard Garriott, designer of SotA, has caused a bit of a shock among his fans.
Richard Garriott prefers mobile games
During Dragon Con in early September, he and SotA producer Starr Long were asked what both of them like to play privately. Garriott stated that he mainly plays on his mobile. He travels a lot, and so he can easily play something on the go.
He even admits that he has played through less than ten PC games. These include the first Myst, Command & Conquer 1, Warcraft 1, and the first Medal of Honor. He also mentions World of Warcraft, which he played to level 25, and the online shooter Battlefield 1942.
SotA was planned as a mobile game
Starr Long also prefers mobile games, which naturally raises the question of how a good PC game can emerge from Shroud of the Avatar.
This was originally even planned as a mobile game by another developer from the team, and there was to be a mobile version released for a long time. Richard Garriott wanted his game to be playable on as many platforms as possible. But now, only the PC version is being discussed.
That Garriott is still very interested in mobile games was demonstrated recently when he asked on Twitter whether there is interest in a mobile game that would play similarly to the classic Ultima 4. So, this is a project he would like to tackle. But first, the completion of Shroud of the Avatar is on the agenda, a game that is controversially discussed due to many gameplay mechanics – such as the focus on grinding, no consequences for decisions, the expensive housing system, and the real-money trading system.
