Should I sell my old PS5 to buy a PS5 Slim?

Sony has introduced new “Slim” models of the PS5. But is it worth buying a new one for current PS5 owners? MeinMMO has taken a look at the console.

If you already own a PS5, you may be wondering whether the purchase of a Slim version could be worthwhile. Because new console models usually offer some advantages.

Is an upgrade to the new PS5 models worth it?

I own a PS5 with a disc drive: If you already own a regular PS5 with a disc drive, there’s really no reason to buy a PS5 Slim:

• The design changes only slightly.
• The weight and size are slightly reduced.
• The performance and specs do not differ from the old models.

If you really want a smaller and lighter console or have problems with your current model (overheating or very loud fans), you might consider buying it. Otherwise, the “upgrade” is not worth it for you.

I own a PS5 Digital Edition: The current Digital Edition cannot be upgraded unlike the new model. If you would like the option to add a disc drive to the PS5 in the future, then purchasing it might be worth considering.

If you are planning to buy the new PS5 with a disc drive anyway, then the Digital Edition with subsequent purchase of a drive does not make sense. Because you will pay a bit more than if you directly go for the fully equipped PS5.

If you are not interested in a disc drive because you only use movies and games digitally, then upgrading to the new Slim model is also uninteresting for you. Because the new Digital Edition will not offer any more performance. It also applies here: If your current Digital Edition is having problems, then you might consider the purchase.

Players hope for a Pro version of the PS5

If you are absolutely satisfied with your current PS5 and have no problems, then there is no reason to sell your old PS5 for a new Slim model.

Many players are therefore hoping that Sony will introduce a more powerful PS5 model or at least a “real” Slim version in the near future. Whether that will happen, however, is unknown. In the coming weeks, Sony’s new accessories for the PS5 will be officially released:
