Google could be forced to sell Chrome. Other companies are already showing interest. Even the old competitor Yahoo is willing to spend a lot of money to buy Chrome.
What is the problem? In the USA, there are antitrust concerns regarding Google. Therefore, there are calls for Google to divest its popular browser Chrome. Currently, a U.S. antitrust proceeding is examining whether Google must separate from its browser. The verdict is expected in fall 2025.
How important is Chrome? According to Statista, Google Chrome held a market share of 65.7% in March 2025, placing it far ahead in first place. Following it is Apple’s Safari browser at a considerable distance with 8.2%. This also shows the market power that Chrome currently has. And that is precisely what bothers the antitrust regulators in the USA.
Yahoo wants to buy Chrome, but OpenAI is also interested in the purchase
Who is interested? According to the English magazine Dexerto, Yahoo has now stated that it is interested in purchasing Chrome. For this, they plan to offer funding in the 11-digit range. Reports suggest that Yahoo is currently developing its own browser. By acquiring Chrome from Google, Yahoo could significantly gain market shares.
Yahoo is a long-time rival of Google and was established in 1994 as a search engine and link directory. However, it still stands no chance against Google: While Google Search is said to cover 97% of all search queries, Yahoo accounts for about 0.25% (via optimerch.com). Even a partnership with Microsoft and cheaper advertising offers did not bring any real improvement. Today, Yahoo plays almost no role in search engine queries anymore.
What is a problem? However, the takeover is not only about the necessary financial resources but also about the technical expertise. Because Google Chrome is not just a browser for PCs or mobile devices, but a comprehensive ecosystem that Google has built over the years.
Whoever eventually takes over Chrome from Google will not just be buying a browser but also a vast network that needs to be maintained and managed.
Yahoo has a financially strong partner in Apollo Asset Management, which could handle the costs and challenges, but companies like OpenAI (ChatGPT) are also interested in acquiring Chrome.
