A gamer discovered a real treasure in his basement, which he shared on Reddit. Some users immediately noticed a special handheld that could be worth nearly 1,000 euros today.
What was that purchase? It is a special edition of the Nintendo 3DS XL, designed to resemble an early Nintendo console: the Super NES or SNES. This handheld was recently unearthed by Reddit user WretchedMotorcade while cleaning out his basement.
As he reported in the Subreddit r/gaming, the handheld was one of the only two drunken purchases he ever made – the other was a Dracula-themed pinball machine.
The SNES edition could be pre-ordered starting in October 2017. Now, this boozy bargain could turn out to be quite a good investment.
Gamer finds retro treasure worth hundreds of dollars
What is the device worth today? According to WretchedMotorcade, he pre-ordered the 3DS at the time, but never even unpacked it, as he already owned a 3DS. Another user points out to the gamer that the handheld, if sealed, is worth more than 1,000 US dollars.
However, the attached image shows that WretchedMotorcade has at least removed the protective film, and the box seems to have a few dents. Nevertheless, the SNES edition is now a sought-after collector’s item (via Reddit).
We have found some comparable listings for you. On eBay, the handheld can be purchased in various conditions for several hundred euros. On Amazon, there are currently 2 listings for this special 3DS:
- “Like new”, with original packaging for 899.99 euros
- “Like new”, unused and with protective film for 1,299.00 euros
The first variant is likely the one that comes closest to what WretchedMotorcade has. Therefore, he could indeed get 900 euros for the 3DS in this country. However, there could be even more to gain, as the gamer has discovered a real treasure in his basement; see for yourself:
Besides the SNES edition, WretchedMotorcade also possesses at least two other special editions of the 3DS, a Pokémon Edition Soulsilver bundle, a SEGA Saturn, and various retro games. “I should clean my basement more often” is the fitting title of the post.
The gamer also states that what is pictured is just the tip of the iceberg: he has been collecting for ages and has never thrown anything away. While cleaning, he discovered many more forgotten items (via Reddit). However, it remains unclear whether WretchedMotorcade really wants to part with his collector’s items.
In any case, it wouldn’t hurt to have a gaming treasure in the basement that one can rely on in tough times. And for nostalgic items, some people are willing to pay a lot: A player pays over 80,000 euros for an ancient video game: “It was the first game my mother ever bought for me”
