We wanted to find out together with you how much time MeinMMO readers spend on average in the character editor. It turns out: Not much.
The memes about hours spent on character creation are as old as gaming itself. Especially in MMOs, which often offer very detailed options for customizing characters, people spend a lot of time in the editor.
However, this does not apply to the majority of MeinMMO readers, as we found out in our survey.
What are the results? A total of 965 of our readers participated in the survey. Each could cast only one vote.
- No longer than 15 minutes: 27.88% (269 votes)
- Up to 30 minutes: 23.73% (229 votes)
- 30 minutes to 1 hour: 24.87% (240 votes)
- 1-2 hours: 12.44% (120 votes)
- 2-3 hours: 4.97% (48 votes)
- 4+ hours: 6.11% (59 votes)
Just over half of you spend a maximum of 30 minutes creating your dream character in MMOs. Thus, a large part of our readers does not fit the common stereotype of people sitting in the editor for hours.
Almost a quarter spends no more than an hour on the character editor.
Only a small part of you spends more than an hour in the editor, let alone two. The stereotype applies only marginally to our readers.
MeinMMO readers have a variety of editor habits
In your comments you gave us many very different reasons for your choice. Not only those who spend just a few minutes in the editor commented, but also the long-haul players.
That’s why you spend little time in the editor: Readers who spend less than 15 minutes creating their MMO character, for example, blamed the helmet for it:
Click on random creation for a while and, if it fits somewhat, continue. So definitely never more than 5 minutes. Why would you, in the end, he’s anyway stuck in armor and even has a helmet on […].
MeinMMO reader Weissbier242
Yeah, yeah, you spend hours and then either find the first helmet after a few minutes, or eventually understand that you only see your character from the back!

The option for random creation seems to be used quite extensively by you in the MMOs. Several readers have indicated it as the preferred choice for appearance with some minor adjustments to round off the creation.
The basic attitude here, however, was that this part of the MeinMMO readership does not place much value on the appearance of their characters.

That’s why you spend a lot of time in the editor: The second faction of MeinMMO readers invests much more time in creating their character. In your comments, you mentioned that the appearance of the character is important to you and the editor is an essential part of MMOs:
I can also spend hours in the character editor. For me, it’s one of the essential points in an (MMO-)RPG! […]
MeinMMO reader Damian
Definitely. With some character editors […] you can hang around for hours.
However, my favorite is APB Reloaded – there, you can not only work on the character editor itself but also with tattoos and clothes.
MeinMMO reader Nico
Here, some made the distinction that you put in more effort, for example, if the MMO can show the character in the cutscenes of the story and not just from behind.
It strongly depends on the MMO how much time you spend tinkering. If a good and detailed editor is offered, it takes longer accordingly.
[…] With editors at WoW-level it takes about 10 minutes. With editors at BDO-level, it can take several hours.
MeinMMO reader Jedox
Did you expect the result? Or did you expect people to spend much more time in the editor?
By the way, overly detailed character editors can even lead to confusion as with Black Desert Mobile:
