World War 3 describes itself as a tactical shooter where players can fight against each other in modern and realistic settings. It originally released in early access on Steam in 2018, but failed to impress. Now, the developers are back with a major rework.
What kind of game is this? World War 3 throws you into World War III, where you can fight against other players with modern weapons, vehicles, and drones. The shooter promises a particularly realistic approach and is set in real locations such as Berlin and Warsaw.
The focus is on two game modes:
- The Warzone mode is somewhat reminiscent of Battlefield, as you fight in 2 teams of 20 players in a battle and can use vehicles.
- In Team Deathmatch, you play in 10v10 matches.
How has the game performed so far? On October 19, 2018, World War 3 entered early access on Steam. Over 11,000 players were online at peak release (via Steamcharts). In its release month, there were 2,772 negative reviews, countering with 4,682 positive reviews. Generally, the shooter was seen in a more positive light.
However, the hype quickly faded, and by December 2018, there were an average of only 357 players online. The numbers even dropped to double digits in 2020.
A major point of criticism was primarily the character animations and the performance of the game. Upon release, there were particular problems with very long loading screens. Moreover, many players criticized over time that the developers had hardly taken care of World War 3.
Until April 2020, there were only irregular hotfixes and news. After that, the developers announced that they would rework the game, and sales were also halted.
What has happened now? In July 2021, a major update was announced, aiming to “revive” World War 3. You can watch it in this video:
Developers promise many improvements for maps, gunplay, and vehicles
What is new now? A video was released featuring a major developer update. It states, among other things, that the developers from The Farm 51 now want to fully focus on World War 3. Additionally, several new features have been announced that have been developed over the past months, including:
- An improved movement system with sprints, double sprints, and sliding
- Adjustments to the UI
- Improvements to all maps, including enhanced navigation and an interesting design
- Improved gunplay and new animations for weapons and players
- Backpacks that allow adjustments to weapon loadouts on the battlefield
- Adjustments to all vehicles
- New cosmetics
When will the new features be released? This is still not entirely clear. The post only states that the new features have already been tested by testers.
