Shooter hit from 2021 loses 96% of players on Steam – now wants to score with 3 new modes

Splitgate attracted tens of thousands of players with a crazy new concept in 2021. However, the hype only lasted a few months. Now the developers are working on fresh content and trying to rekindle the excitement.

What kind of shooter is this? Splitgate has actually been in Early Access since 2019. The gameplay concept is quite simple: fast-paced shooter gameplay in the style of Unreal Tournament meets Portal. On MeinMMO, Splitgate was a clear recommendation as an alternative to CoD Vanguard and Battlefield 2042.

You jump rapidly through the map and confuse your opponents (or yourself) with portals. The mechanic adds a whole new dimension to shooters and thrilled so many players, that the indie studio even had to delay the release.

In August 2021, the game reached its peak with over 67,000 players simultaneously. The success even attracted sponsors, who pledged a total of 100 million dollars to Splitgate in total. Since then, however, it has been quiet around the game.

What is the current state of Splitgate? According to steamcharts, an average of 1,362 players were playing in May 2022, peaking at 2,198. For comparison:

  • in August 2022, the peak was 67,724 players
  • on average, Splitgate had 36,262 players
  • the average player count has thus decreased by 96.24%

However, more than 1,000 players is by no means a death sentence for an indie shooter. The developers are even optimistic and are introducing 3 new modes that players can soon explore.

3 new modes in Season 2 – What’s next?

These are the new modes: In a new blog post, the developers talked about the future of Splitgate. Highlighted are 3 new game modes:

  • Hotzone: a variant of King of the Hill, where you must secure a zone for 30 seconds to score points. After that, the position of the zone changes.
  • Lockdown: a variant of Domination. All 3 zones must be held by one team to score a point. Then the positions change.
  • Juggernaut: one player becomes the Juggernaut, gains more health points, and is faster but cannot place portals anymore. Every second as Juggernaut gives points, and all other players compete against him. If the Juggernaut dies, the killer becomes the new Juggernaut.

The team modes are designed to address the issue of “snowballing” that the community is currently facing. Juggernaut is intended to provide more “Free for All” action. Juggernaut, Hotzone, and Lockdown follow Evolution from Season 1 as new modes.

If you missed it: Here is the trailer for Season 1:

When will it all be released? With the 2nd Beta Season of Splitgate, the new modes and further adjustments will come. Season 2 releases on June 2, 2022.

Even though Splitgate has lost many players, it is still considered an excellent pastime for many – also here in the editorial office of MeinMMO. Especially when you just need something to play in between, Splitgate is perfect:
