After the flop of the MMO shooter Battleborn, the studio Gearbox lands on the death list of a tech blog.
Ars Technica publishes a “death list” every year of tech companies that they believe are on the brink of collapse, facing descent into technological, economic, or cultural irrelevance. The shooter flop “Battleborn” has earned Gearbox a spot on the list this year.
Publisher 2K Games needed a successful shooter badly after the 2015 flop “Evolve“, says Ars Technica. However, Battleborn sold even worse than Evolve, especially since it was overshadowed by a significantly better team shooter.
After the high-budget project Battleborn has failed, Gearbox needs a new strong game in 2017, but there doesn’t seem to be anything in the pipeline that really promises success. There is nothing heard from the incredibly profitable “Borderlands” series. Therefore, Ars Technica fears that publisher 2K Games might cut the umbilical cord to Gearbox, with fatal consequences.
Battleborn is considered a flop. “Undeserved”, many say, including our author Jürgen Stöffel:
