Everything is new at Shards Online. Even during the alpha phase, Citadel Studios is revamping their MMORPG Shards Online and transforming it into Legends of Aria. The concept that players play on relatively small islands floating in space and each has its own rules – whether PvP, story, PvE… – has been pretty much discarded.
Instead, the development studio now wants to release a full-fledged MMORPG in the style of Ultima Online.
Is this Ultima Online 2?
In essence, Legends of Aria could already be considered an unofficial Ultima Online. You operate in a large, hand-crafted and open game world and can fight each other almost anywhere. The open PvP even offers full loot. This means if you are defeated in battle by other players, they can take all your equipment.
However, the developers also want to offer many safe zones where players can experience PvE adventures and craft in peace. Because crafting is important, as you can supply your fellow players with everything they need.
Since Legends of Aria is a sandbox MMO, it is up to you how you spend your virtual life in the fantasy world of Celador. Do you want to be an adventurer exploring enchanted forests, ancient ruins, and dark dungeons, or do you perhaps want to open your own tavern and serve adventurers? The choice is yours. Through a housing system, you can also build and customize your own house.
You can also create your own worlds
However, you will still be able to create your own worlds where your rules apply. These worlds can even be connected to allow players to switch from one world to another.
The “base world”, however, is now a large continent focused on open PvP and a deep lore. For fans of Ultima Online, Legends of Aria could be a dream come true. The alpha of Shards Online remains accessible. A release of the game is planned for this year via Steam.
