A player actually earned a Play of the Game in Overwatch through the skillful use of an Ultimate. However, that was spoiled by a crash. Still, the highlight has now been seen by half a million fans.
This is the highlight: The player and reddit user GabiDraco defended as D.Va in a round on Numbani. There he cleverly used his Ultimate Self-Destruct.
As a defender, he attacked the opposing team while they were advancing on the point. For protection, the opponents gathered behind Orisa’s shield.
GabiDraco broke through this shield using his boosters and triggered the self-destruct behind it. Due to the short recoil, hardly any enemy could escape. But just as the bomb was about to explode, GabiDraco was thrown back to the main menu by a server error.
Despite this, 500,000 fans saw the highlight: He eventually posted the clip of this scene, which would probably have been the Play of the Game, on reddit. Here the clip has been viewed over 500,000 times according to data from gfycat. (As of March 18 at 5:00 PM)
A Play of the Game usually shows the best scene from the previous round. However, since the round was ended by a server error, the scene does not count.
Other fans’ reactions: GabiDraco titled the thread “Blizzard servers ruining dreams.” He receives both praise and sympathy from the community for the scene.
Dozens of reddit users simply commented with “F,” a meme that comes from Call of Duty. There players could press the F key to “pay respects” at a funeral. (“Press F to Pay Respects”)
Others note that they would have probably freaked out if that had happened to them. Another user reports that the same thing happened to him. The servers crashed just as his team was coming back into the game from a looming defeat.
What do you think of the Play of the Game that never made it into the game?
With another spectacular scene, the meta was recently immortalized:
