Crazy Taxi is making a comeback – and probably as a AAA game and as an MMO. Fans have high hopes for an old, beloved franchise.
In December of last year, Sega talked about reviving some old game franchises and working on their development. One of these titles is “Crazy Taxi,” which has especially ignited the hopes of gaming veterans. In a video on YouTube, new details were discussed that spark excitement for more.

What is Crazy Taxi? In the Crazy Taxi series, the name has always been the game. At its core, it’s about getting customers from one place to their destination as quickly as possible as a taxi driver. However, you earn more points by performing crazy stunts during the ride and showcasing particularly dangerous maneuvers.
However, some of our younger readers may not have heard of Crazy Taxi. The last main game in the series, Crazy Taxi 3: High Roller, was released in 2002 – that is now 22 years ago. Since then, there have been several mobile spin-offs and a few games within the same franchise, where you didn’t have direct control over the taxi.
What kind of game will this be? According to a YouTube video from Sega, the new Crazy Taxi is set to do quite a few things differently than its predecessors, making it more aligned with the current zeitgeist. It is described as a “large-scale” game with an open world – a Massively Multiplayer Driving Game.
This means multiple drivers can play at the same time. They are currently testing the limits of how many can realistically be implemented. The original style of Crazy Taxi is to be preserved, but it will come with many new mechanics.
It’s a given that this will also involve some new game modes. A previous teaser had shown that players can also drive police cars – which will presumably try to stop the crazy taxi drivers (or deliver them to jail with insane stunts).
When is the release? There is no release date yet for the new “Crazy Taxi” game. Since some positions in the development team are still being filled, it is likely to take a while. After all, fans of the franchise hope that one of the most absurd and funniest game concepts will be revived – even if the release may not come for several years.
