The analysis page Superdata has published the May figures for Fortnite . Compared to last year, Epic generated 38% less revenue, but the developers do not need to be really worried.
What do the numbers say? A revenue loss of 38% should actually be concerning, but when looking at Fortnite’s numbers, that is not the case at all.
In May 2019, around the Season 9 of Fortnite, Epic earned 203 million dollars with the game. Fortnite remains the highest-grossing game on consoles. On PC it ranks fifth.
Fortnite is still huge, even though the hype is over
What is causing the revenue decline? In May 2018, Fortnite was likely at its peak. This was followed by the summer, which brought Fortnite worldwide fame.
Now, a year later, the huge hype is over. However, a large number of players have remained loyal. Fortnite still has millions of players, but Epic cannot reach the last summer’s numbers.
Is Fortnite getting smaller now? The battle royale shooter still generates revenues that most other games can only dream of. On Twitch, Fortnite streamers are still the most popular, and in summer the big Fortnite World Championship for several million dollars in prize money is happening. So Fortnite is still not really “small.”
Here Fortnite has an advantage: Currently, the battle royale genre is still very popular. Fortnite is the first stop for players since no other game has managed to captivate like Fortnite has.
In February we witnessed the big rise of Apex Legends, but even Respawn’s game could not compete with Fortnite in the long run.
What’s next for Fortnite? In the coming years, Fortnite will certainly not disappear from the scene. Epic is trying to attack on all fronts and attract players.
They are expanding their creative mode to attract fans from Minecraft and are currently building a very large esports department to establish Fortnite in this industry as well. There will be a huge highlight with the Fortnite World Cup in summer.
Currently, Fortnite is also planning something big again. There is now “14 Days of Summer” – an event where there will be a lot of new content every day:
