Season 17 in Destiny 2 was story-wise concluded this week. Players experienced the last cutscene and witnessed the final story fragments. The next chapter will likely follow with the start of Season 18. However, Bungie has already left some hints pointing to a season featuring the most ruthless NPC in the loot shooter: the Drifter.
What is happening in Destiny 2 right now? In week 7 of Season 17, the end of the story finally took place. The Guardians discovered Calus’s location and followed him, aiming to put an end to his machinations with the Darkness – but without success. Calus is gone, but the threat is not defeated.
The next events of the story are likely hidden until Season 18. However, Bungie has left some clues about what might come next and why a cunning little rat could be at the center of it all.
The Drifter in the spotlight of Season 18?
What points to a Drifter season? If you have read the lore, you will notice that the Drifter and Eris are currently quite busy. They are working together to figure out what the Egregore spores and their fungi are all about. The Drifter even claims that they scream when you fry them.
The story’s end of Season 17 last revealed a radio message from Eris. In this message, she wants to continue her investigations in the Moon Pyramid. However, this message is not directed at you, but addressed to the Drifter. He is the one referred to when Eris uses the term “rat.”
Eris has been using this name for the Drifter for a long time now. Mainly because this designation suits his character well.
But it’s not just this that points to the ruthless Gambit leader. Since Beyond Light, the Drifter has not had a spotlight appearance in Destiny 2, despite clearly being the character with the most experience with the Darkness.
He could provide the Guardians with further insights into the Darkness in Season 18 with his casual sayings and help them understand it better. Perhaps even the modified red-eyed ghost of the Drifter will assist you in taking down Calus and the Witness.
What could Season 18 look like? No one knows for sure yet, but if the Drifter is in the spotlight, some weapons from the first Drifter season could reappear from the vault.
Minor adjustments for Gambit or even the return of old maps or implementation of new ones could bring fresh air in the particle mode. Ultimately, even the mere appearance of the unscrupulous lightbearer would bring joy to many Guardians.
Despite the fact that the Drifter has had the most trouble dealing with the Darkness and its beings on an icy planet, Bungie has yet to give him much attention.
Perhaps it’s time for the Drifter to finally bring a bit of light to his dark history and for the Guardians to find out what his past looks like.
