Do you need a pet for your pirate in Sea of Thieves? Soon you will have the opportunity to buy some. Yes, microtransactions are coming!
What has Rare announced? In a developer diary, the team talked about introducing microtransactions, with which you can buy things like emotes or pets.
There has been a long discussion about this, and the developers have repeatedly stated that while microtransactions are planned, they will not impact the game. Now there is concrete information about this.
The microtransactions are intended to continue providing support for Sea of Thieves and to develop new updates.
Microtransactions are coming!
What can pirates buy? Initially, the option will be introduced for you to buy pets. Then emotes will be added. Furthermore, plans include cosmetic items that you can use to customize your ships.
Pets are expected to be interactive. This means you can throw them overboard. However, the animal will then return to you.
What animals are there? An online list has surfaced, naming these ten species:
- Cat
- Monkey
- Parrot
- Snake
- Honey Badger
- Dogs
- Rabbit
- Mice
- Goats
- Horse

What about Pay2Win? Rare explains that there will be no Pay2Win. All items that you buy are purely cosmetic. No one can purchase boosts or advantages.
Everything you can purchase with real money is completely optional; no one should feel compelled to purchase anything.
Are there loot boxes? Rare has explicitly spoken out against loot boxes. You should always know what you are getting for your money.
Can you earn the pets in-game? That is currently unclear. Players are already wondering if there might be standard variants that can be found and then premium versions to purchase. However, there is currently no statement on this. It seems that, at least for now, you will have to buy the pets.
When will the items arrive? The pets were actually planned for the anniversary update at the end of April, but after feedback from insider testers, the team decided to revise the pets and postpone them to a later date.
However, they are now supposed to be tested by participants in the insider program next week. Depending on how these tests go, the pets will then be introduced into the game shortly thereafter.

What do the players think? Generally, the fans of Sea of Thieves are glad that there are no loot boxes and that it is only about optional cosmetic items that can be purchased.
However, the question remains whether some items can also be earned in the game or if they must always be purchased. Players would prefer to earn items, and those who want them faster should be able to buy them.
Many are already looking forward to the pets and are wondering what kind of animals will be available. Monkeys have already been confirmed, and parrots are also considered certain. What would a pirate be without a parrot on their shoulder?
