In Sea of Thieves (Xbox One & PC) respawning will soon cost you hard-earned gold. The more foolish and idiotic your death was, the more you will have to pay. Also in PvP?
If you currently meet your end in the colorful pirate sandbox MMO Sea of Thieves, you don’t have much to fear. Aside from an annoying waiting time on the “Ship of the Damned”, there are no consequences. Once your waiting time is over, you can respawn.
But the free respawning will soon be history.
Those who die foolishly will be more costly
With an upcoming update, according to Sea of Thieves developers at Rare, the respawn mechanics will change. Instead of patiently waiting on the ghost ship, you will have to bribe the captain there.
The interesting part: The more avoidable, or “dumber”, your demise was, the more you will have to pay. Because the captain of the ghost ship gets annoyed when someone acts like a fool. However, what the grim ferryman interprets as particularly foolish deaths is not explained.
Will PvP griefing soon get even worse?
But what about PvP? Will a miserable death at the hands of a griefer also count as a foolish death? Because so far, it is common to respawn near your death location. It’s unfortunate if you are currently being boarded by other players who are just waiting to kill you again, lurking with drawn weapons at the spawn spot.
That can quickly get expensive. But here, the developers provided clarity. In response to a question on the official Sea of Thieves Discord, Rare’s team explained that they do not want to charge players for an honorable death in PvP. That would have a very negative impact on the enjoyment of the game.
However, those who shoot themselves against a rock with a cannon, drunkenly fall overboard, or get eaten by sharks due to recklessness will certainly have to pay.
