The developers at Rare talk about sword fighting in the upcoming pirate online game Sea of Thieves, because what would a pirate be without a saber?
When thinking of pirates, one also thinks of their sabers and cutlasses that they swing onto other ships to capture them and engage in thrilling battles with other sailors. Sword fighting is simply part of the experience. The developers of the upcoming pirate online game Sea of Thieves knew this, which is why sword fighting has been a feature that has been highly valued from the very beginning.
Sword fights are important
In a new video, the developers specifically talk about this game element. Design Director Gregg Mayles mainly discusses why sword fights are so important in Sea of Thieves and the significance they hold. Senior Engineer John Watkins, on the other hand, explains how sword fights unfold in the game and also shows how they are integrated in the current version.
An immersive fight without a great HUD
There will be different types of attacks, and it will also be possible to block attacks. Everything will have an audiovisual effect that conveys the feeling of really landing blows. Even when attacked from behind, a special effect will indicate this. This should also support the immersion, as Sea of Thieves relies on a very minimal HUD, which is why you receive a lot of information through audiovisual effects and not constantly have numbers, texts, and windows on screen as in other online games.
Sea of Thieves is currently in a phase where short alpha test sessions are held periodically. A release is still planned for this year on Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs.
