The Hungering Deep update is the first update with new content for Sea of Thieves. Additionally, five more content updates have been announced.
The missing content has been criticized by the community since the beta phases. While Sea of Thieves is a lot of fun, it has little to offer in the long term, was the general sentiment.
In a developer update, Rare now explains that a lot will change in the coming weeks and months. New content updates are planned, plus there will be weekly events to entertain the pirates.
The Hungering Deep brings new AI opponents
The first free update for Sea of Thieves will be released in May. It is called The Hungering Deep and brings a new threat into the game. What this threat entails is still unclear. What is certain is that crews will need to work together to discover and defeat it. It will involve a unique event.
Additionally, many new mechanics are introduced to help pirates on this new adventure. There are also unique rewards for completing the event.
After The Hungering Deep, weekly events will continue. Here, new mechanics will play an important role. Players will have the opportunity to participate in new fun ways in the events and to earn rewards.
For 2018, the team has planned six content updates so far, in addition to The Hungering Deep, five more. Two of these are planned for this summer and will bring a new ship, a new section on the map, additional enemies, mechanics, and rewards. All updates will be available for you for free.
“As we’ve always said: the launch is just the beginning of Sea of Thieves. We will grow and continue to develop the game with community feedback,” explains Executive Producer Joe Neate in the video.

The fact that content is finally in sight is very well received by the community. On Reddit, the pirates from the community are throwing their hats in the air and are happy that Rare (although late, but at least) listens to community feedback. “This gives me hope that they [Rare] are doing the right thing and are actively working to make the game better for both participating parties,” writes user bunnyhat3.
