Light and lighting is important in every game, as it creates the right atmosphere. The developers of the upcoming online game Sea of Thieves place a particular emphasis on realistic lighting in the game world.
In a new video, the developers discuss the lighting system, which changes the intensity, color, and warmth of light every 10 minutes. While the system is roughly divided into morning, noon, evening, and night, transitions between these times are needed, ultimately leading to a change in light every ten minutes, with the transitions being seamless.
Light creates atmosphere
Moreover, special attention is paid to how light rays refract and reflect on different surfaces, and the sun plays a special role. Ultimately, one wants to present rich, deep red sunsets over the ocean that enchant the players. In this regard, a little trick is used, as the sunset will occur slightly slower than the rest of the time in the game so that it can be enjoyed longer. Additionally, the sun will appear larger then (and at sunrise) to create an optical illusion.
The developers state that they are satisfied when others think the sunset looks very good instead of saying that the lighting in the game is very good. The lighting system is not meant to be noticeable to the players, but only the atmosphere it creates.
Sea of Thieves will enter beta later this year and will be released in February 2017 for Windows 10 PCs and Xbox One.
