Malcolm in the Middle takes the concept and stuffs it into a pot full of chaos. Nothing about this series fits a classic sitcom. For one, the characters are not just family roles; they constantly have their own stories that do not always end in the viewers learning something. Malcolm in the Middle strikes the perfect balance between realism and absurd stories.
Especially Hal, played by Bryan Cranston, is a big highlight. His episodes are always pure gold, and despite the often incredible events, you empathize with him.
The series has smart gags and slapstick humor, but also lovable moments, which is why Malcolm in the Middle still ranks among the best series in the genre.
