This isn’t just meaningless hustle; it always feels like organic behavior, as if real processes are happening in the background, and as a viewer, you only see J.D. and his colleagues. This makes it all feel like more than just a set full of extras. J.D.’s stories are smaller events in a larger whole.
The Sacred Heart feels bigger, more tangible, and overall more realistic. This benefits the gags, the dramatic moments, and the characters as a whole. One believes that what is happening has actually taken place somewhere in the USA.
This also demonstrates the skill of cinematic craftsmanship. Attention is paid to compositions, and the more people are in the frame, the harder it is to create a coherent construct, even in the background. Everything seen must be planned, and the creators behind Scrubs are quite good at that.
The revival knows how important the Sacred Heart is
In the controversial 9th season of Scrubs, the hospital was demolished and replaced with a medical school. The season, which wasn’t well received by fans anyway, lost not only the cool set, but also symbolically the heart that makes Scrubs so brilliant.
In the revival, Season 9 seems irrelevant, as the Sacred Heart is back. Since the original building no longer exists for the revival shoots, the Sacred Heart had to be rebuilt. While not all floors could be recreated, places like the iconic entrance are back. In a YouTube video from Architectural Digest, the production shows how they tried to recreate certain places, even if they have to cheat a bit.
Now it just remains to be seen if they can cinematographically bring the Sacred Heart back to life again, because it absolutely deserves it.
