An old acquaintance will soon appear in the multiplayer shooter Predator: Hunting Grounds (PC, PS4): Arnold Schwarzenegger returns to his role as Dutch Schaefer, in which he first fought against the alien in 1987 and became THE action hero of the 80s.
Who does Arnold Schwarzenegger play? In the 1987 film Predator, Arnie portrayed Alan “Dutch” Schaefer, the leader of a private army of mercenaries hired by the U.S. military and the CIA for an alleged rescue mission in the jungle of Guatemala.
But in the jungle, an alien, the Predator, is on the loose, which gradually kills Dutch’s men to make trophies out of them.
A long-awaited return
When does Arnie return to this role? On May 26, two DLCs for the multiplayer shooter Predator: Hunting Grounds will be released:
- In the free DLC, players will find cassettes with recordings from Dutch Schaefer during missions. In these, the mercenary recounts what he has experienced since his mission in Guatemala back then and what he is currently doing. This is meant to continue the story from the 1987 film. Arnold Schwarzenegger himself has narrated the recordings.
- The paid second DLC introduces Dutch as a playable character, including his iconic weapons, the QR5 rifle “Hammerhead” and the large knife – both items will also be available for all players for free starting in June.
Why did Dutch record these cassettes? On the cassettes, which players can find in the potential Twitch hit Predator: Hunting Grounds, the mercenary has basically left a kind of life insurance. Should anything happen to him, his story can reach the public through the recordings. The developers explain:
We had many meetups with the design team to make this story water-tight because we are weaving it into the universe. It’s not like Dutch left in ’87 and had nothing to do with the universe anymore. We tied it to the universe.
Jared Gerritzen, Chief Creative Officer of the developer studio IllFonic.
Finally, we learn the further story of Dutch
Why is this so interesting? Fans of the Predator films have been wondering since the 1987 film what happened to Dutch Schaefer. He was only mentioned in passing in Predator 2 from 1990. He did not appear in the further sequels.
Originally, cameo appearances of the mercenary were planned for the films Predators (2010) and Predator: Upgrade (2018), which Arnold Schwarzenegger declined.
Now we will find out what Dutch has experienced since his encounter with the alien.
How does Dutch’s appearance affect the game? Essentially, the mercenary is just another playable character. The interesting part is more the cassettes that you can find.
To appropriately integrate Dutch Schaefer into the game, the look of Arnie was not simply transferred into the game. The designers created his look as he might currently appear as Dutch Schaefer.
