Olivia Colman played Ellie Miller in the series Broadchurch, who has to solve the murder of a boy together with Detective Inspector Alec Hardy (David Tennant). However, as she shared in a talk show, she already knew beforehand who was responsible for the act – but she was not allowed to tell anyone.
In the talk show The Graham Norton Show on February 16, 2024, Olivia Colman revealed that she had learned before the start of filming who the perpetrator(s) in the series Broadchurch was/were, but she was not allowed to tell anyone – not even the person themselves.

“That was a Whoops”
The host addressed the actress about the big Broadchurch secret that Olivia Colman, along with the series producers, knew before everyone else.
She explained: “That was a Whoops.” Because she wasn’t actually supposed to know who the guilty person in the story was; it had been a mistake on the part of the producers.
You can listen to the anecdote from the Broadchurch actress yourself here:
Why did she know who the perpetrator was? The actress went on to say that she came to the first meeting to read the script for the pilot episode and to meet the producers of the series.
When she was asked how she found the script, she replied that she already loved it and immediately asked the big question: “Please, who did it?”
In fact, the actress promptly got the answer: “I cried, and they said, ‘That’s exactly what we want.'”
Olivia Colman can currently also be seen in a darkly humorous historical drama on Netflix. You can read more about it here with our colleagues at Moviepilot: New on Netflix: Disturbing historical drama with Emma Stone, for which the stars had to form a “human pretzel” and other bizarre things
However, on the way home from the meeting, Olivia Colman received numerous messages from the production team. Because they weren’t supposed to tell the actress who was responsible for the crime.
“Please don’t tell anyone. We think we will do it in a way that none of the actors know, not even the person who did it knows.”
As the actress further explained, it was extremely difficult for her to keep the secret, “I had to stop taking the bus and such things,” she joked, because she would have loved to tell everyone directly.
And in fact, according to Olivia Colman, even the person who was responsible for the crime in Broadchurch still knew nothing about the resolution of the series until the last episode.
