Currently, users are actively discussing a scalper. The reseller is said to have allegedly lost thousands of euros through graphics cards from AMD and Nvidia. But what is really behind this?
A video has now caused a lot of attention. In it, a scalper (or reseller) claimed to have lost more than $23,000 (approximately €21,500) on graphics cards. However, the community’s reactions are surprisingly divided.
We explain what is behind this and what lies behind the alleged losses of the scalper.
A video on TikTok divides the community – Real or Fake?
What kind of video is that? On reddit, a nearly 20-second video from TikTok was posted. In this, an alleged scalper shows how he has dozens of graphics cards from various manufacturers in a large cardboard box. In several text overlays, he explains that he has already lost $23,000 on graphics cards.
These are the reactions to the video: The first reactions are very clear: Many users express their disdain towards scalpers more than clearly and state that this guy doesn’t deserve any better.
Even the title of the thread “That’s what you fucking get” speaks a clear language. Scalpers are considered by many people to be the reason why gamers have hardly been able to buy graphics cards.
However, some users consider the video to be a fake. Several indicators suggest that it cannot be a real scalper reporting his plight in the video:
- Real scalpers would not stack graphics cards like that in a cardboard box and take them out of their original packaging. This would decrease the value of the graphics card they want to sell.
- A reseller would likely not call himself “GPU_Scalper” on TikTok. After all, very few of these people would call themselves “scalpers” since the term has only negative connotations.
- Some even speculate that this is more likely a mining professional who must have dismantled his mining rig. This is also supported by several very old graphics cards in the box.
The general reaction to the video clearly shows that gamers have very little respect for scalpers and that resellers have been able to profit significantly through various tricks. And if we look at the current market situation, it becomes clear that there is at least a kernel of truth in the video.
By the way, you can read how much our readers are willing to spend on a graphics card in the following article:
Graphics card prices are lower than they have been in years
What is behind the losses? For months, graphics card prices have been falling significantly. For the current top graphics cards from AMD and Nvidia, you are currently paying as little as ever, and the graphics cards are also well available.
- For an RTX 3080, you had to pay nearly €1400 in December 2021. As of June 2022, you pay between €700 and €900 depending on the provider.
- For an RX 6700 XT, you still had to pay around €950 in December 2021. As of June 2022, you pay around €500 for AMD’s mid-range.
The trend is clear: The prices for hardware are falling significantly, as the graphics cards are now well available. It is therefore not unlikely that scalpers who bought many graphics cards are now stuck with their inventory.
After all, why would customers buy graphics cards for thousands of euros from scalpers when they can get the hardware for half the price in its original packaging and with receipt and warranty?
For many users, it is therefore clear: The wait was worth it now that prices are finally falling. And in their eyes, the scalpers are getting what they deserve.
