The Fiery Finale
While you can already tell here and there whether the tanks are wearing fire-resistance gear, the protection against fire attacks really comes into play against the final boss Ragnaros. If you want to play the fight safely, the two main tanks should reach 315 fire resistance, the melee fighters 150 to 200, and the remaining characters 100 to 150.
On Sunday, very few players will likely achieve these values. Accordingly, it is dangerous to challenge Ragnaros.
Many hazardous situations need to be mitigated by fire protection potions. The previously mentioned buff from UBRS helps as well. However, positioning and aggro management must also be right. Tanks with fire protection gear can build threat only to a limited extent. Especially all melee fighters are at risk.
In my experience, there are also 2 particularly dangerous mechanics:
- During Wrath of Ragnaros, Ragnaros creates a knockback effect around him that knocks melee fighters back. With high fire resistance, you can resist this. It becomes dangerous if both tanks are knocked back, but one of the offensive melee fighters is not. This usually means aggro and the immediate demise of the damage dealer.
- After a few minutes, Ragnaros disappears into the lava and 8 fire elementals appear, charging at the raid. In theory, these need to be gathered by tanks, pulled together in one place, and dealt with deliberately. In practice, however, chaos among inexperienced raids is usually so great that people die.
The first danger can be minimized by having all offensive melee fighters seek distance just before Wrath of Ragnaros, waiting safely at a distance until a tank has secure aggro on the boss. However, this reduces the raid’s damage on the boss.
However, you need maximum damage to ideally defeat Ragnaros before the Sons phase begins. With a raid full of well-equipped damage dealers who are buffed to the max, this is not a problem. However, during the first visit with partly inexperienced players, 12 healers, and suboptimal gear here and there, it looks different. It could very well be that Ragnaros survives the first raid day without a pull.
