The long-awaited MMORPG Ashes of Creation announces the second Alpha, after the first was heavily criticized in spring 2021. Now the developers are trying again and also show a new biome in the trailer: A desert.
Ashes of Creation is a sandbox MMORPG with a fantasy setting from developer Intrepid Studios. They originally announced it for 2019, but the release has been pushed far back.
2021 saw the start of the first Alpha, but it faced plenty of criticism. Too few options in the character editor, quests that feel generic, a world that is too small, promised content was missing. The animations also looked very raw.
Developers entice with new trailer
Presumably, the developers want to show with the current trailer how much they have improved. The video shows a character riding a giant snail through the desert. The landscape is very detailed. Roaming animals are also shown.
The animations here look fluid, the world huge, the graphics impressive. Presumably, Intrepid Studios aims to motivate new or returning testers for Alpha 2.

For Alpha 2, the developers promised significant improvements over the first tests. The map is supposed to be larger, covering 220km². They explain more new features in their own wiki. They promise, among other things, naval content, so content in and on the sea.
This time, the test is supposed to be persistent, so the servers will remain online day and night until the final launch of the MMORPG.
Who can participate in Alpha 2? Only those who purchase the Voyager pre-order package or a better version can participate. The fun costs $250 or $375. Presumably, some streamers will also be invited to Alpha 2 to increase the game’s visibility. For example, the well-known streamer Asmongold participated in the first test.
In total, as in the first Alpha, nearly 10,000 players can try Ashes of Creation. When exactly the test starts, the developers should announce soon.
Ashes of Creation as a great MMORPG hope
What makes the game special? The MMORPG leaves the world to the players and relies on a so-called node system. These are locations that can be conquered, expanded, and defended. Each node has a zone to which it exerts influence.
In Ashes of Creation, the entire game world is divided into zones, each associated with a city. A city starts as a small collection of tents and grows over time through the influence of players. They need to complete quests in the entire zone. However, players can attack and conquer their city.
Intrepid Studios thus delivers exciting PvP content but also aims to appeal to PvE fans.
These contents the game also offers:
- At the beginning, you create a character from 9 different races and 8 different classes. You can, however, combine each class with a second one, resulting in a total of 64 class combos.
- The individual areas are supposed to contain dungeons and world bosses that you can defeat with other players.
- The combat system offers a mix of action and tab-targeting.
- Leveling is done through quests and grinding.
- Crafting is supposed to play a significant role.
- In the end game, you fight for a total of 5 castles. Whoever controls these castles collects taxes from the cities within range.
When does the game come out? There is still no date for the full release. From the Ashes of Creation wiki, we can only infer that after Alpha 2, there will be Beta 1 and Beta 2. With the upcoming tests, the hope for a prompt announcement of the release grows.
