With the Ryzen 7 7800X3D and Ryzen 7 5800X3D, there are two really fast processors primarily aimed at gamers. But which CPU is worth it the most and which one should you buy?
What kind of processors are they? The two AMD processors, Ryzen 7 7800X3D and Ryzen 7 5800X3D, are among the most popular processors among gamers. Because they are currently the fastest CPUs you can buy on their respective platforms.
However, the more important question is: Is it still worth buying a Ryzen 5800X3D with AM4, or should you go for the newer Ryzen 7 7800X3D? MeinMMO explains the differences and similarities.

7800X3D vs. 5800X3D: The Similarities
Perhaps not surprisingly: Both processors come from AMD and are both from the Ryzen series. The Ryzen series is based on the Zen microarchitecture and was first introduced in 2017.
Much more interesting, however, is that both processors have a 64 MB “3D” V-Cache. That’s why both processors have “3D” in their name.
Ryzen 7 7800X3D vs. 5800X3D: The Differences
The biggest difference is the supported socket: The Ryzen 5800X3D still works with the old AM4 socket, while the Ryzen 7800X3D uses the AM5 socket.
But with the socket come additional differences as well. The Ryzen 7800X3D supports DDR5 memory and the new PCIe 5.0 generation.
Ryzen 7 7800X3D – Advantages and Disadvantages
Advantages: If you just want to game, then you can’t ignore the 7800X3D. Here you get the currently fastest and most efficient CPU in the gaming sector. In tests, it is between 15 and 20% ahead of the in-house Ryzen 7 5800X3D and can easily beat the Intel Core i9-13900K in gaming.
Disadvantages: AMD has clearly targeted its 7800X3D for gaming, and you can feel that in its multi-thread performance. Because it is limited to 8 cores. Another disadvantage is the high costs compared to the older 7 5800X3D.
Ryzen 7 5800X3D – Advantages and Disadvantages
Advantages: The Ryzen 7 5800X3D was considered the pinnacle for the AM4 chipset at its release in 2022. For gaming, you can’t get more performance anywhere, except for the successor. When it comes to gaming, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D can still compete with many top processors (via gamestar.de). This is mainly due to the CPU’s 3D V-Cache.
Disadvantages: The Ryzen 7 5800X3D is not perfectly suited for general applications. You can get better options from Intel and AMD that can handle multithread tasks faster. Another disadvantage is that the AM4 socket is now outdated, and no new processors or features will be developed for this platform anymore.
Ryzen 7 7800X3D vs. 5800X3D: Which is better?
Which is the fastest processor? The Ryzen 7 7800X3D is clearly the faster and more modern processor. This is also due to the better chipset: With AM5, you should also be future-proof for the coming years.
Is the Ryzen 7 5800X3D still worth it? The Ryzen 7 5800X3D remains the best processor you can get for the AM4 socket. If you want to stick with the AM4 socket or are wary of high upgrade costs, then the Ryzen 7 5800X3D is still worth recommending.
For whom are the CPUs worth it? If you mainly want to game with your computer, then you can buy without hesitation. However, if you are looking for a CPU for a workstation or a system for compute-intensive tasks (such as rendering), then there are other processors that are more recommendable.
