Green Lantern is a superhero film that was released in theaters in the summer of 2011 and is based on the DC comic book character of the same name. Ryan Reynolds plays the pilot Hal Jordan, who is selected as the first human member by the intergalactic police force “Green Lantern Corps”. The Green Lanterns possess enormous superpowers thanks to the green power rings.
Even the main actor Ryan Reynolds often jokes about the DC flop, for example in his successful superhero films Deadpool 1 and 2:

Green Lantern made Reynolds’ “butt flutter”
This is why Green Lantern flopped: According to Ryan Reynolds, 185 people worked on the film. They had a great time and a lot of fun during the shoot. However, there were too many people who spent too much money (via variety.com).
They invested too much money in special effects and thought too little about the characters:
Instead of saying, when there was a problem: ‘Okay, let’s stop spending money on special effects and think about characters. How can we replace this big spectacular thing – that didn’t work at all – with something character-based?’ the thought was just never… there.

How expensive was Green Lantern? According to IMBd, it had a budget of 200 million dollars and a worldwide gross of nearly 220 million dollars.
Even though the team had a great time shooting Green Lantern, it was hard for Ryan Reynolds to sit through the premiere and watch the film.
