Clear words from the boss behind Rust – if you don’t like the game, then just keep your hands off it.
That complaining about every existing video game in various forums and especially on Reddit is not a big deal in itself. However, it is rare for developers to snap and speak their minds. Garry Newman, the co-founder of Facepunch Studios, which is behind Rust, is such a rarity. He commented on Reddit about the current situation of the game – and the comments – as follows:
“I see a pattern here and we need to talk about it. This is something we need to overcome as a community, not just because it’s boring, but because it has broader implications.
We are caught in a vicious cycle. We release an update, you love it for a month, then get bored, complain about the system, whine for a few months, and then we release a new update – and the same thing happens.
My concern is that this will become a constant thing. We will never reach a point where you say, “Yes, leave it as it is. Don’t change anything,” because it’s not that one system is better than the other, but one is simply newer than the other.”
If you follow the Rust subreddit, he’s probably not wrong with this analysis. But he goes even further:
“If you find the game boring, then just stop playing it. But before you get angry about it, please consider whether the game has given you enough entertainment over the last 3 years to justify the $20 you paid for it. (…)
“If we want to leave Early Access behind, breaking the vicious cycle has to be part of our plan. We have a pretty good idea of how Rust should evolve. But none of these changes will make the game better for those who have spent their last 1,000 hours hating it.”
Cortyn says: Such direct words in the industry are refreshing. This can easily be applied to other games. Because who doesn’t know the typical “idiots” in their favorite MMORPG, who hang around in the general channel all day complaining about how bad the game is – yet log in every day? I will probably never understand these people.
Rust has always caused controversies – for instance, regarding gender and skin color constraints.
