The survival MMO Rust is currently achieving massive success. However, it is only available on PC. Versions for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One have been planned for a while and are set to be released in 2021. It now seems to be becoming concrete.
What has happened? The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) has granted an age rating for the PS4 and Xbox One version of Rust. The survival MMO is rated “M” on consoles (via ESRB).
The letter stands for “mature” and indicates that Rust is aimed at an adult audience. The ESRB notes that Rust contains blood and violence and that players use firearms.
When is the release? There is still no concrete date for the release of the console version. We only know that Rust is supposed to be released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2021.
However, the ESRB rating indicates that development is progressing. Presumably, a release date will be announced within the next few weeks. The rising popularity is likely also putting pressure on the developers.
For the next-gen consoles PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, there is currently no information. However, Rust will likely be playable here via backward compatibility.
Rust is more successful on PC than ever
For some time now Rust has had more players on Steam than ever before and is also at the top on the streaming platform Twitch. Interest in the survival game continues to rise, and among the players, there are certainly many newcomers.
Therefore, interest in a console version of Rust is also growing. After all, it already belongs to the best survival games of 2021.
Where does the success come from? Rust owes its wave of success to a server project, where 50 major Twitch streamers play and showcase content. The server is so popular that hundreds of thousands of viewers tune in regularly.
With success, however, there are also recurring dramas. An internet warlord has put a bounty on one of the streamers, another received a ban from the server for gunning down another player in PvP.
Sometimes even viewers get involved and rat out what other streamers are planning. However, this takes the tension out of the whole thing – and corresponding streamers who take advantage of this are also banned.
Nevertheless, the popularity of Rust does not seem to be diminishing anytime soon; rather, it appears to be expanding. After the success of the OfflineTV project, Spanish and now also German projects followed suit. However, the German Rust scene started directly with a sexism discussion.
