The developers of RuneScape and Old School RuneScape have announced new subscription prices. Despite the hype surrounding the current changes in MMORPGs, there is much criticism.
What are the new prices? The developers of RuneScape and Old School RuneScape are once again raising the subscription prices for the premium subscription in the game. From today, it will cost €13.49 per character. Anyone who wants to support two or more characters will pay the same price for each character again.
While the RuneScape MMORPGs are Free2Play, many important functions and challenges are hidden behind the monthly payment. Accordingly, many players are affected by the increase.
The last price increase was not long ago. The developers already raised the costs for players in 2022 and 2024. The price has risen by about 36% in 5 years (source: MMOWire).

First good vibes, now trouble
What’s the situation with RuneScape? Under the new head Jon Bellamy, Jagex and the RuneScape franchise are currently undergoing major changes. There is a packed roadmap with dozens of changes and adjustments that fans have long wanted across all games.
Moreover, there are new contents to look forward to. The new head is also addressing the Pay2Win issue and recently removed the controversial Treasure Hunter system from the game, which previously allowed for Pay2Win.
The community’s mood was also quite positive, as they were excited about the franchise celebrating its 25th birthday, suddenly coming back to life – especially after years of stagnation.
How are fans reacting to the new prices? Although the developers have generated hype with the numerous new features, ambitious goals, and less Pay2Win, the third price change in a few years clearly dampens the mood.
Fans on Reddit are reacting negatively to the renewed price increase, even though it is necessary to better position Jagex:
- bigeyez: “I suppose you have to recoup the lost RuneScape 3 microtransactions somewhere. The monkey’s paw is closing”
- Mage_Girl_91_: “Shaking my head, we are a year away from RuneScape costing more than WoW…”
- SoftestPup: “If you want to charge more than Final Fantasy XIV and as much as WoW, then this $15 should allow you to play more than one character.”
- Rammjack: “This is the reason why I canceled. One character for this price is kind of lame”
The fans are clearly showing the developers that they would prefer a cross-account subscription for the price, instead of just a character-bound service. However, the team has not announced this change yet.
Despite the dampening effect of the subscription price increase, the developers have great plans for their RuneScape MMORPGs in 2026. Players will receive a lot of content for the new price, which is substantial.
