There are increasing rumors that Google wants to enter the gaming market. A proprietary console and a streaming service are reportedly in the works – this could mean that PS4 and Xbox One will face strong competition.
Google is increasingly pushing into the gaming market. At least that is what several rumors say, as reported by Kotaku. Some independent sources claim that Google intends to release its own console, a streaming service, and even its own games in the coming years.
Play current PC games simply in the browser?
Streaming service for all platforms. One of the rumors states that Google is currently working on a streaming service that would allow games to be played on various platforms in high quality. The actual game would then run on an external high-end computer from Google and be streamed in real-time to various devices of the user. Essentially, this could allow current PC games to be played easily in a browser or on a smartphone – provided the internet connection is stable. Other streaming services have failed precisely because of the issue of fast connectivity, as hiccups, lags, or pixelated graphics would condemn the project to failure.
Own Google hardware – a console? The rumors about Google’s own hardware are not yet that specific. Whether this involves a console that wants to compete with the next generation of game consoles or merely a device that supports game streaming remains unknown.
Google could leverage its own advantages to revolutionize gaming
YouTube guides as an overlay. The possibilities for Google to utilize existing services would be nearly endless. Are you stuck in a difficult part of the game? With just a press of a button, the streaming service or console could offer an overlay that shows guides on YouTube or a “Let’s Play” that provides tips and hints.
Google previously wanted to buy Twitch. That Google is trying to step more strongly into the gaming market is obvious. In 2014, the company tried to acquire Twitch but was outbid by Amazon. Even Niantic, known for Pokémon GO, has its roots at Google before the studio became independent.
However, all these rumors should be taken with caution. Google is known for starting projects only to abandon them if they fail. Moreover, it is likely to be difficult to compete against established giants like Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo. Many other consoles have tried to make a similar jump and have failed miserably.
Do you think Google can gain a stronger foothold in gaming?
