What kind of game is this? The role-playing game “Expeditions: Rome” on Steam is the third part of a series of historical tactical role-playing games from a Danish developer. It was released in January 2022.
Essentially, it is a “serious” role-playing game reminiscent of a stripped-down Dungeons & Dragons, with a focus on tactical combat like in X-COM:
- You control a group of heroes who go on adventures and fight a lot.
- You will soon have about 14 heroes to choose from, from which you repeatedly select 6 to defeat enemies.
- The battles are rather tactically realistic like in “Wartales” and take place without magic or magical superweapons like in Baldur’s Gate 3.
“Expeditions: Rome” has an additional gag: You not only control your group of Praetorians, but also a Roman legion that captures outposts and resources, fights battles, and constantly grows its encampment.

- Longer role-playing segments in which the companions and your character gain depth.
- And an atmospheric storyline.
